Overview

Selection to a Representative Team gives pool lifesaving athletes the opportunity to represent their Club, State/Territory or Country at Domestic and International events through out the year. Selection also opens doors to development and leadership opportunities in and out of the pool, with access to high performance coaching and mentoring, National and International touring opportunities, and in some circumstances, access to individual sporting grants and funding. To be eligible for Representative Teams, athletes must be a member or Royal Life Saving (or Surf Life Saving for SLSA representative teams), hold a current Lifesaving Award, and attend selection events.

NSW State Team

Each year, Royal Life Saving NSW selects a State Team to compete at the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships (APLSC). These Championships bring athletes together from across the nation, giving them the opportunity to compete against one another and post times to qualify for the Australian Lifesaving Team. In recent years, the NSW State Representative Teams have been packed full of highly competitive and talented athletes, achieving tremendous individual and team successes at the APLSC.

Athletes wishing to be considered for selection in the NSW State Team must submit their personal best times in RLSSA sanctioned competitions within the last 3 years (inclusive of approved SLSA Championships). Applications must be submitted via an Expression of Interest form to the RLSNSW office for review by the Selection Committee.

The 2025 Australian Pool Life Saving Championships will be hosted by Royal Life Saving NSW at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from the 16th to 18th of January. NSW State Team selected to compete at APLSC 2025:

Royal Life Saving NSW will also register a Development Team to compete at APLSC in 2025. Those who submitted a nomination, but were unsuccessful at making the NSW State Team, are eligible for the Development Team and will be contacted with further information.

Australian Lifesaving Team

Supported by Sport Australia (SA) and in partnership with Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA), the Australian Lifesaving Team (ALT) is the High Performance pathway for lifesaving sport in Australia. The Australian Lifesaving Team is comprised of three squads - Youth, Pathway and Open. Top performing athletes in each discipline (pool, open water/craft and beach) are selected to contest the biennial Lifesaving World Championships (LWC) and other national team competitions within the two-year Lifesaving World Championship campaign.

Most recently, the LWC 2024 was held in Australia on the Gold Coast, from the 20th of August until the 8th of September. Congratulations to our RLSNSW members Chelsea Jones and Brayden Woodford that were selected in the Australian Lifesaving Team to compete at LWC 2024. Both athletes performed exceptionally well and came home with medals.
