The Royal Life Saving Commendations Program exists to formally recognise acts that reflect the values and principles of lifesaving, courage, service, community responsibility, and a commitment to protecting human life. Through this program, Royal Life Saving NSW|ACT|TAS acknowledges individuals whose actions have made a significant impact during emergency situations and critical incidents across our communities.
Commendations provide an opportunity to celebrate the efforts of everyday people, volunteers, professionals, and organisations whose actions contribute to safer communities and demonstrate the importance of lifesaving knowledge, preparedness, and community spirit.
Each nomination undergoes a detailed assessment process to ensure recognition is awarded fairly and consistently against established criteria. The program aims not only to acknowledge individual actions but also to highlight the importance of rescue, first aid, resuscitation, emergency response, and community support in preventing loss of life.
Below you will find a breakdown of the nomination process, eligibility requirements, assessment information, and important details to assist you in completing a nomination.
Nominations are open to members of the community, emergency service personnel, community organisations, government organisations, and individuals across New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and Tasmania. Any person may submit a nomination. Please complete the Royal Life Saving Commendations Application Form and provide as much detail as possible, including the date and location of the incident, a description of the nominee’s actions, witness details and contact information, and any supporting evidence or documentation. A separate nomination form must be completed for each individual nominee, even if multiple people were involved in the same incident. Supporting documents such as witness statements, photographs, media articles, and other relevant evidence can also be submitted with the application. Nominations for emergency service personnel, including Police, Ambulance, Fire and Rescue, Rural Fire Service, and State Emergency Service personnel, must first be submitted through the relevant agency's Awards or Protocols Unit before being forwarded to Royal Life Saving for consideration. Recognition categories are available for community members, emergency service personnel, and members of community or government organisations. A successful rescue outcome is not required, as nominations are assessed on the actions taken and how they align with recognised lifesaving principles and practices. All nominations are reviewed by the Royal Life Saving Commendations Committee against established award criteria, and submission of a nomination does not guarantee the granting of an award or citation. Nominations are accepted throughout the year; however, to be considered in the next annual awards cycle, they should ideally be received by 1 November. Please note that the assessment process may take 12–18 months or longer. All nominations are treated as strictly confidential, and nominees should not be informed that they have been nominated. If additional supporting information becomes available after a nomination has been submitted, it may be provided while the nomination remains under review. All nominations are assessed by the Royal Life Saving Commendations Committee against the established award criteria. Commendation ceremonies are held annually, with recipients from New South Wales recognised at Government House, recipients from the Australian Capital Territory recognised at a ceremony within the ACT, and recipients from Tasmania recognised at a ceremony held within Tasmania.
