
Swim Teacher – Infants and Toddlers
Overview
Royal Life Saving Infants and Toddlers is a nationally recognised course for swim teachers looking to gain specialist knowledge in teaching infants and toddlers. Accreditation is valid for three years.
The Infants and Toddlers course will deliver the skills and knowledge required to create activities for the development of infants over six (6) months of age, toddlers, and care givers in an aquatic environment with communication techniques suited for this age range.
Please note: Royal Life Saving Society NSW is not a CRICOS provider; it is unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa.
Delivery Mode
Below are the steps and participant’s journey.

Step 1 Book a course and complete/provide evidence for Prerequisite requirements. The Infants and Toddlers course material is delivered via a blended mechanism, involving online learning and on the job assessments, alongside third-party observation from an approved RLS Workplace Supervisor. Candidates must have access to a computer and the internet to access these online modules.
Step 2 Complete online modules. Upon fulfilling the prerequisite requirements, candidates will be required to complete a self-paced online knowledge component. Only those who have completed the online modules in full will be able to complete the on-the-job assessments.
Step 3 Complete and Submit Step 3 of the Infants and Toddler Workbook. The workbook involves an on-the-job assessment, which ensures the swim teacher can apply the skills learnt in the online course at their place of employment. The on-the-job component needs to be signed off by an approved RLS Workplace Supervisor for final approval. The Workplace Supervisor will then submit the application on the candidates behalf to - submissions@royalnsw.com.au
Candidates are covered under Royal Life Saving Insurance until the final Statement of Attainment has been issued.
Step 4 Licencing: Complete Step 4 (pages 13-14) in the Infants & Toddler Workbook. To obtain your Swim Teacher – Infants & Toddlers licence, you are required to complete this section alongside your Approved Royal Life Saving Workplace Supervisor, who will submit the Licence Application on behalf of the candidate to Royal Life Saving - by email to submissions@royalnsw.com.au
Steps 3 & 4 of the Infants & Toddlers Workbook may be submitted at the same time if suitable.
The amount of training is approximately 20 hours, comprising of:
· Online learning and assessment: 8 hours
· On-the-job teaching and assessment: 12 hours
Prerequisites
The following units from the SISSS00132 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Skillset must be held, before commencing this course:
· SISCAQU024 - Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
· SISCAQU025 - Teach water safety and survival skills
As these units of competency are newly introduced to the aquatics industry, we are providing a number of expedited pathways to attain these pre-requisites, depending on the qualifications the candidate currently holds.

Throughout the candidate’s enrolment process, they will be prompted to upload evidence of one of the above scenarios – it is important to ensure that units of competency are specifically listed.
Once accepted, the candidate will be enrolled into the relevant coursework. Coursework will be distributed 1-2 business days from successful enrolment.
Age Requirement
Candidates wishing to complete this training are to be 16 years of age or turning 16 in the calendar within which the course is to be held to participate in this course.
Outcomes
The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher – Infants and Toddlers course contains a unit of competency which is nationally recognised from the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training package. Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following unit:
· SISCAQU027 - Promote development of infants and toddlers in an aquatic environment
