- Upcoming changes to Swimming and Water Safety Teacher course
In our continuous efforts to enhance the quality and relevance of our training, we are transitioning to new units that will further elevate the standards of swimming and water safety education. Change Overview: We are introducing new units to the SISSS00132 course curriculum, designed to provide a more comprehensive and up-to-date approach to swimming instruction and water safety. These changes are based on industry feedback, best practices, and the latest advancements in aquatic education. Benefits: Enhanced Curriculum: The new units offer a more structured and engaging learning experience, equipping instructors with the latest techniques and methodologies in swimming and water safety education. Industry Alignment: These changes are aligned with current industry standards, ensuring that our candidates are well-prepared to excel in their roles as swimming and water safety teachers. Improved Learning Outcomes: The new units are designed to foster a deeper understanding of water safety principles, effective teaching methods, and hands-on practical skills. Timeline: The transition to the new units will take effect from 30th October 2023 Support and Resources: We understand that change can raise questions, and we are committed to assisting you throughout this transition. We will be available to answer any questions or concerns to ensure a seamless integration of the new units. Changes to the following Specialisation Courses Amendments have been made to the following specialisation courses: SISCAQU027 - Promote development of infants and toddlers in an aquatic environment. - World Drowning Prevention Day 2026: Uniting to Turn the Tide Against Drowning
Today marks the beginning of World Drowning Prevention Day activation week, with communities across NSW, ACT and Tasmania encouraged to come together to help turn the tide against drowning. Observed annually on 25 July, World Drowning Prevention Day is a United Nations-recognised global advocacy day that shines a spotlight on one important message: drowning is preventable. This year's theme, "Uniting to Turn the Tide Against Drowning," recognises that preventing drowning is a shared responsibility. Whether you're a parent, teacher, swim instructor, aquatic professional, community organisation, workplace or recreational water user, every action you take can help create safer communities around water. Why does World Drowning Prevention Day matter? Drowning remains one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives every year. In Australia, drowning continues to have a devastating impact on families and communities, with recent trends highlighting increasing concern around: declining swimming and water safety skills among children and young people increasing drowning rates among older Australians ongoing risks around inland waterways the overrepresentation of culturally and linguistically diverse communities in drowning statistics. The encouraging news is that drowning is preventable. Through swimming and water safety education, active supervision, CPR training, safer behaviours around water and strong community partnerships, we can reduce drowning and save lives. World Drowning Prevention Day is an opportunity to start conversations, build awareness and inspire action that lasts well beyond a single day. Get involved this activation week As World Drowning Prevention Day falls on a Saturday this year, we encourage organisations to celebrate throughout the week leading into 25 July. Whether you're planning a small workplace activity or a large community event, every activation helps raise awareness and reinforces the importance of water safety. - Updated extension periods for Lifeguard qualifications
Last week, the National Aquatic Industry Committee communicated it's confirmed renewed position on Lifeguard qualification/licence extensions. The committee endorsed the following: Extension periods for Pool Lifeguards now mirror the length of their associated lockdown (example: 12 week lockdown equals 12 week extension) Extension periods for Swim Teachers remain at a maximum of 4 weeks where the Swim Teacher has been in lockdown for a period of 7 days or more Extension periods for Aquatic Program Instructors remain at a maximum of 4 weeks where the instructor has been in lockdown for a period of 7 days or more All extension periods will commence from the date aquatic facilities are able to reopen. NSW has been harshly affected by this second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and this announcement was welcomed by an industry desperate to get back on it's feet. Craig Roberts, General Manager of Drowning Prevention and Education at Royal Life Saving NSW said "The National Aquatic Industry Committee's statement and renewed position has provided some reassurance across the sector. Pool managers and their teams can now plan a little more confidently knowing that the requirements for requalification are more flexible." Royal Life Saving is planning for the increased demand in training and update courses once Government vaccination targets are met and communities start to open back up again across NSW and the ACT. Penny Hodgers, General Manager of Capability and Capacity at Royal Life Saving NSW said, "Royal Life Saving has training opportunities already scheduled until the end of the year. We strongly encourage all affected Lifeguards and Swim Teachers to book into an update course as soon as it is practical to do so. Our fee-free transfer policy will ensure nobody who has to reschedule a course due to COVID will be financially penalised". With the majority of centres expected to reopen at similar times, those who leave their qualification renewal until the last minute may experience fewer course options. - ACTIVE ADULTS
ACTIVE ADULTS | Enjoying a water way of life... our entire life ACTIVE ADULTS Enjoying a water way of life... our entire life At Royal Life Saving, we want every Australian, no matter their age, experience and background to enjoy a water way of life. Aquatic recreation in, on or around the water is a fantastic way to stay fit throughout life and enjoy our Australian waterways. The Active Adults campaign encourages older Australians to participate in, and enjoy, a water way of life, their entire life. Research from the Australian Sports Commission into the exercise patterns of older adults has shown that the majority of adults over 55 years of age are insufficiently active. 59% of adults between 55-64 years of age are not meeting recommended activity levels for their age. 75% of adults 65+ years of age are not meeting recommended activity levels of their age. With a large proportion of our older adults not meeting suggested activity levels, we at Royal Life Saving are promoting the benefits of participating in recreational activity in, on or around the water. Whether it's swimming, aqua aerobics, kayaking, cycling, tai chi or walking by the water, the physical, mental and social health benefits of exercise are vital for good health throughout life. Unfortunately, the drowning statistics for adults over the age of 65 has been steadily increasing in recent years with approximately 60 Australians losing their lives each year. Falls into water is one of the main contributing factors to these statistics. Maintaining a good level of physical fitness reduces the risks of falls by the water that could result in a fatal incident. It's never too late to start enjoying the benefits of physical activity in, on or around the water. Let's enjoy a water way of life...our entire life!
