- Financial support announced for NSW council employees
The New South government has announced financial support of $1500 per fortnight for local government employee employees impacted by COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. In a statement issued Friday 13th August, Minister Shelley Hancock announced the cash support for local council employees will be made available under a job retention allowance similar to that established in 2020. Minister Shelly advised the job retention allowance provides $1500 per fortnight for any eligible employee for up to three months, in order to help councils retain staff whose employment has been impacted by the current COVID-19 outbreak. This is a great opportunity for local councils to retrain and redeploy affected staff two other areas within the LGA. It is hoped by the minister that local councils will adopt this initiative during the current lock down restrictions. Up until now, Commonwealth Government assistance has not been available to local councils which had a huge impact on the Aquatic and Recreation Workforce during the 2020 lockdowns with many of the workforce stood down and ultimately lost from our Industry. Last week saw the release of the PWC report commissioned by Royal Life Saving Australia on The Social, Health and Economic Value of the Australian National Aquatic Industry The report identified that in NSW, 67% of the 658 Aquatic Facilities are staffed and managed by local government employees; in the ACT, the breakdown is 47% of the 23 facilities and in Tasmania the proportion is the highest with 84% of the 50 facilities being operated by local governments. It is estimated that in 2020, 67,000 frontline workers throughout Australia in the Aquatic and Recreation Industry were stood down. Royal Life Saving CEO, Michael Illinsky, highlighted the importance of this report and how crucial it is to support our Industry’s workforce during these extended lockdowns. “We have identified 63% of the Aquatic industry workforce are either casual or part-time, primarily filling the roles of Lifeguards and teachers of swimming and water safety. To have financial support for our workforce in these uncertain times is imperative to ensure our venues can retain staff and be ready to reopen when restrictions ease.” To be eligible under the current scheme, councils must be able to demonstrate an actual or potential loss of at least 30% in revenue for the current or previous quarter in that business unit or entity. Eligible councils will also need to be part of the Splinter Award or equivalent agreement, have continued to pay eligible employees four weeks paid COVID-19 special leave, and entered into a funding agreement with the office for local government. More information on the Splinter Award and Councils that are currently covered by this Award can be found here. Councils can now lodge their submissions for claims for the New South Wales Job Retention allowance through the New South Wales State Government. - Reaching Beyond and Connecting Seniors
As we bid farewell to the 2024 NSW Seniors Festival, it's time to reflect on the profound impact of this celebration, which honours the invaluable role and contributions of older adults to our local communities. This year's festival theme, 'Reach Beyond', resonated deeply with seniors, inspiring them to embrace new experiences and forge stronger connections within their communities. One of the remarkable initiatives that unfolded during this festival was the partnership between Royal Life Saving and various local councils and aquatic facilities across the state. This collaboration was only made possible thanks by the generous support of the NSW Government through the Connecting Seniors Grant, as well as contributions from Club Grants, including those from Windsor RSL Club and Briars Sports Club. Through these partnerships, Royal Life Saving was able to deliver Water Safety and Lifesaving Refresher programs tailored specifically for seniors. These programs not only aimed to promote water safety but also sought to foster a sense of empowerment and inclusion among older adults. By equipping seniors with essential lifesaving skills and knowledge, these initiatives empowered them to enjoy aquatic activities with confidence and security. Let's take a closer look at some of the programs that were made possible through these grants: Club Grant Programs: Hawkesbury Seniors Lifesaving Refresher: 2 sessions Sat 4 May 2024 Canada Bay Seniors Lifesaving Refresher: 1 session Connecting Seniors Regional Grant Water Safety and Lifesaving Program Sessions: Valentine Hydrotherapy Pools, Lake Macquarie: 14-28 March 2024 Bay Pavilions Arts & Aquatic, Batemans Bay: 18-24 March 2024 Tenterfield Pool: 24 March to 8 April 2024 Maitland Aquatic Centre: 4-18 April 2024 Gosford Olympic Pool: 7-21 May 2024 As we mark the end of another memorable festival, it's essential to continue recognising and appreciating the wisdom, experience, and vitality that seniors bring to our lives every day. As the exclusive Australian partner of AngelEye – a European-made, world-class AI Drowning Detection System – SET is revolutionising aquatic safety. With 17 years of experience and more than 300 systems installed across 30+ countries, AngelEye is the most reliable and well-proven ISO 20380 compliant drowning detection system on the market. The AngelEye system utilises patented underwater cameras with inbuilt light functionality to provide full pool vision coverage, continuously monitors swimmer behaviour, and delivers instant alerts to lifeguards or pool staff via smartwatches and other devices within seconds of detecting danger. The system provides information on the exact location of the incident, aiding rapid response. The underwater cameras can be retrofitted into existing underwater lights. Where this isn’t possible, an aerial camera system using infrared technology – unaffected by surface glare – can be implemented. AngelEye records all activity for incident review, supports lifeguards by overcoming visibility challenges, and adds a critical extra layer of safety. It is suitable for both new and existing pools, with flexible installation that can replace standard lighting with high-efficiency LED technology. All data is stored on a local server in compliance with privacy laws, bringing peace of mind to pool operators and swimmers alike. In addition to its drowning detection capabilities, the AngelEye system includes a suite of operational and data-driven solutions, collectively known as Safeguard. These features have been refined through years of operational use and can be tailored to meet each facility’s unique needs. Safeguard includes: Real-time headcount tracking and patron trend analysis Ratio control to monitor swimmer-to-lifeguard requirements After-hours access control integrated with facility security Water treatment integration for energy-efficient filtration and heating AngelEye for Trainers – a video analysis tool for swim coaches to improve technique and performance SET is proud to lead the way in aquatic safety, delivering cutting-edge technology and peace of mind to pool operators and communities across Australia.
