  • Smart & Skilled pathways into a career in Aquatics

Students in year 10 interested in a career in Sports, Recreation and Aquatics but unsure about University now have a fantastic VET pathway - SIS31015 Certificate III in Aquatics and Community Recreation. This School Based Traineeship combines online learning with on-the-job training that aims to deliver valuable customer service experience, practical industry knowledge and transferable life skills. Gone are the days where a career in Aquatic was just a stop-gap job whilst finishing University or school. The Aquatics Industry is a rapidly growing, and thoroughly rewarding industry, with career opportunities available to a diverse workforce for people of all ages and backgrounds. Royal Life Saving recently profiled a few familiar faces in our industry that started out their own careers through Vocational Education and have built successful and rewarding careers. Read their stories: Scott Vanderheyden: Area Manager; Belgravia Leisure Uni isn’t for everyone – I studied I.T. and never used it a day in my life! Instead, I worked as a Casual Lifeguard for my local council pool before becoming a Duty Manager, Operations Coordinator and eventually Centre Manager at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre. Now I oversee five different venues as an Area Manager and love the ability to impact peoples’ careers while helping them develop and learn! Throughout my time in the sport/aquatics industry I’ve learnt irreplaceable business skills, made lifelong friends, engaged with the community that I love and have had the chance to make a real positive impact on society. Louise Smalley: Royal Life Saving Society NSW; Swimming and Safety Coordinator After finishing school I worked as a Swim teacher, Pool Lifeguard, Customer Service Officer and casual Swim School Supervisor and loved every minute of it! Before undertaking further tertiary study, I was offered a full time Supervisor position and never looked back. I am now the Swimming and Water Safety Coordinator with Royal Life Saving NSW, managing large, swimming and water safety programs throughout NSW. Just as I’ve had the opportunity to work in several roles and learn many transferable skills along the way, the Cert III in Aquatics and Community Recreation is a great launching pad for a career in the sports, fitness and aquatics industry – especially with the availability of debt-free VET qualifications. Roz Neville: Manger, Willoughby Leisure Centres I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I left school, but I loved sport and being active, especially water and so it made sense to work as a Swim Teacher / Lifeguard. I was very lucky to have some great mentors along the way and after completing some VET study and industry-based training, I gained the skills, knowledge, and confidence to reach my dream job of being a Facility Manager. I have been fortunate to sit on several Industry Committees throughout my career and I am now able to give back to those working in an Industry that has given me so much. Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life! Jason Phillips: Royal Life Saving Society NSW; Regional Manager After thirty years in the Sports and Recreation industry, despite many changes and innovations, the sector remains essentially the same: we’re dedicated to supporting people’s passions and providing opportunities for everyone to safely participate in a range of aquatic and recreational activities. Nowhere is this more important than in our great regional and coastal towns of NSW that boast some of the best beaches and waterways in the world! After joining this industry as a young employee, I enjoyed fabulous on-the-job training and mentoring, built confidence and practical knowledge, and now have a huge range of friends and colleagues throughout NSW that I love visiting and working with. 20 July 2021 Smart & Skilled pathways into a career in Aquatics Training & Development < Back to News Students in year 10 interested in a career in Sports, Recreation and Aquatics but unsure about University now have a fantastic VET pathway - SIS31015 Certificate III in Aquatics and Community Recreation. • Celebrating Seniors Festival: Supporting Safe and Active Ageing in and Around Water

With NSW Seniors Festival approaching next week, communities across the state will come together to celebrate the valuable contributions of older Australians and promote opportunities for people to stay active, connected and healthy as they age. At Royal Life Saving NSW, Seniors Festival is also an important reminder of the role that water safety and aquatic activity can play in supporting healthy ageing — both physically and socially. Over the coming months, Royal Life Saving NSW is proud to partner with the NSW Government and local aquatic facilities across Western Sydney to deliver a series of FREE Seniors Water Wellness Programs for adults aged 60 years and over, starting in March. These programs are designed to help older adults confidently return to aquatic environments, build skills and enjoy the many benefits that water-based activity provides. Why Water Safety for Older Adults Matters New national research from Royal Life Saving Australia highlights why programs like these are so important. The latest report shows that older Australians are now experiencing the highest drowning risk on record, with people aged 65 years and over accounting for 26% of all drowning deaths, despite representing just 16% of the population. In 2024/25 alone, 115 older Australians lost their lives to drowning — a 55% increase on the 10-year average. Over the past decade: 736 older adults have drowned in Australia 57% had a pre-existing medical condition 75% of those conditions were cardiovascular-related Many incidents occurred close to home or within 5km of residence Common activities included swimming, boating and unintentional falls into water As Australians live longer and remain more active, time spent around water also increases. While this is positive for health and wellbeing, it also highlights the need to better understand and manage risk. Factors such as underlying medical conditions, reduced mobility, medications, fatigue and falls can increase drowning risk with age. The message is clear: staying active around water is important — but doing so safely is essential. Supporting Lifelong Aquatic Participation Royal Life Saving strongly supports a lifelong approach to aquatic participation. Water-based activity provides significant benefits including improved mobility, cardiovascular health, balance, strength and mental wellbeing. It also creates opportunities for social connection, which is vital for healthy ageing. The goal is not to discourage participation, but to ensure older adults can continue enjoying aquatic environments safely, confidently and with awareness of their personal limits. Seniors Water Wellness Programs Across Western Sydney To support this, Royal Life Saving NSW will deliver FREE Seniors Water Wellness Programs across multiple aquatic centres in Western Sydney from March onwards. These programs focus on: Returning to aquatic activity in a safe and supportive environment Building confidence in and around water Learning practical water safety and lifesaving skills Understanding personal risk factors and safe decision making Gentle aquatic exercise to support strength, mobility and balance CPR awareness and emergency response knowledge The programs are suitable for: Adults aged 60+ People new to aquatic activity Those returning after time away All fitness and swimming ability levels Importantly, the sessions are social, welcoming and delivered by experienced instructors who understand the needs of older participants. Get Involved As we celebrate Seniors Festival, there is no better time to prioritise health, wellbeing and confidence in, on and around water! Registrations are now open for upcoming Seniors Water Wellness Programs across Western Sydney, with sessions commencing in March. Spots are limited and bookings are essential. 👉 Visit our events page to find a program location near you and register. www.drowningprevention.org.au/industryevents Together, we can support older Australians to stay active, connected and safe in the water for life. 24 Feb 2026 Celebrating Seniors Festival: Supporting Safe and Active Ageing in and Around Water News and Media < Back to News With NSW Seniors Festival approaching next week, communities across the state will come together to celebrate the valuable contributions of older Australians and promote opportunities for people to stay active, connected and healthy as they age.
