The course will introduce you to the tasks, skills and techniques for teaching students on the spectrum. Course modules include: Understanding what autism is, and what it isn’t Identifying the strengths, interests, characteristics and behaviours of people on the spectrum and better understanding how they may think and learn Understanding the relationship between autism, water, swimming and drowning prevention Preparing lessons or programs tailored to individual participants on the spectrum Preparing for and managing behaviours you may experience when teaching swimming to participants on the spectrum Utilising a range of strategies and techniques during lesson delivery Course Pre-Requisites There are no formal entry requirements but to benefit from the learning we advise that Learners have a minimum of Swim Teacher or equivalent. These modules add to the suite of Professional Development products for the aquatic industry workforce designed by Royal Life Saving. Other recently developed online learning modules include Conflict Management, Cultural Competence, Communication Skills, Child Safety for Frontline Staff, and Child Safety for Management Staff. Delivery Mode The course is an online training course. Certification Upon successful completion of the online course participants will receive a completion certificate. Age Requirement Participants wishing to complete this training are to be 16 years of age or turning 16 in the calendar within which the course is to be held to participate in this course.     Pool Lifeguard Update Courses / Pool Lifeguard Update Training Menu Back to Courses Student Handbook Code of Practice Group Bookings Online PD Funded Training Learner Portal Verify a Certificate Subscribe Course Enquiries Overview This course provides an opportunity for existing Lifeguards to renew their annual qualification in a single day format. Please note: Royal Life Saving Society NSW is not a CRICOS provider; it is unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa. Delivery Mode This course is delivered in a blended format; below are the steps and participant’s journey. Step 1: Enrol into Pool Lifeguard Update Course. Course schedules can be found in the "How to enrol" section below. Candidates must have access to a computer and the internet to access the pre-course online modules. Step 2 Complete online modules. Online learning is provided upon successful enrolment. Candidates will be required to complete a self-paced online knowledge and theory component before being practically assessed across the one-day workshop. Both the HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation Online Learning and Pool Lifeguard Online Learning must be completed prior to attending the course. Only those who have completed the online modules in full will be able to attend the practical component of this course. Step 3: Attend and successfully complete the one-day Pool Lifeguard Update . Candidates must successfully complete the practical components under the award conditions. Upon successful completion of Step 2 (online learning) and Step 3 (1-day course) candidates are issued with their nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and updated Pool Lifeguard Licence (if previously held). The amount of training is approximately 12 hours, comprising of: · Online learning and assessment: 5 hours (Step 2) · Face-to-Face assessment/supervised Instruction: 7 hours (Step 3) Open the Pool Lifeguard Update Practical Assessment Overview to view the on-course assessment information. Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy This course requires a moderate to high level of Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills. ACSF 3 in Learning, Reading, Oral Communication and ACSF 2/3 level in Writing and Numeracy. View the Australian Core Skills Framework for more information. Prerequisites To enrol in this course‚ you must possess a current Pool Lifeguard qualification/Pool Lifeguard units of competency and current HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid as prerequisite. If you are needing to renew your First Aid qualification, please contact your local RLS office – as an existing Lifeguard, you may be eligible for a discounted enrolment. A medium to high level of aquatic fitness is required for some practical components of the course. Candidates must also be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a resuscitation manikin placed on the floor. There is a moderate to high level of reading and writing in this course. ACSF 3 language and reading level required. Candidates who experience language and/or literacy difficulties may identify and request additional learning support through the enrolment process. Age Requirement Candidates wishing to complete this training are to be 16 years of age or turning 16 in the calendar year within which the course is to be held to participate in this course.     The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher course provides candidates with essential competencies to teach swimming and water safety to school age persons. SISSS00132 - Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Courses / SISSS00132 - Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Training Menu Back to Courses Student Handbook Code of Practice Group Bookings Online PD Funded Training Learner Portal Verify a Certificate Subscribe Course Enquiries Overview Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher is a nationally recognised course that provides candidates with essential competencies to teach swimming and water safety to children aged 3-12 years. Accreditation is valid for three years. This course will additionally cover the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. Please note: Royal Life Saving Society NSW is not a CRICOS provider; it is unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa. Delivery Mode This course is delivered in a blended format; below are the steps and participant’s journey. Step 1 Book a course and complete Online Pre-Course Learning. Course schedules can be found in the "How to enrol" section below. Candidates are required to complete the Swim Teacher – Swimming and Water Safety Online Learning, prior to attending booked course. Only those who have completed the online modules in full will be able to attend the practical component of this course. Step 2 Attend and complete practical face-to-face course. Participate in a 1-day practical face-to-face course. Upon successful completion candidates are issued with a HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation Statement of Attainment and a Swim Teacher Step 2 Completion Letter. Step 3 Unit Completion to receive Swim Teacher Statement of Attainment. Candidates are to complete Step 3 (Post Course Workbook – issued at the course) and have their Approved Workplace Supervisor submit it to the closest Royal Life Saving Office. Upon successful submission, candidates will receive their Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher Statement of Attainment – which can be used to gain employment. Applications submitted by candidates will not be considered and will be returned for resubmission by your Approved Workplace Supervisor. Step 4 Complete Licensing Application. Once employed, candidates are requested to complete Step 4 (Licence Application) within the Post Course Workbook. The Application is to be approved by your Approved Workplace Supervisor, who will then submit the application on your behalf to the closest Royal Life Saving Office. Upon successful application, you will receive a Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher Licence. **The on-the-job training hours ensures the swim teacher can apply the skills learnt in the training course at their place of employment. The training hour components needs to be signed off by a workplace supervisor. The amount of training is approximately 32 hours, comprising of: · Online learning and assessment: 9 hours · Face-to-Face assessment/supervised Instruction: 8 hours · Training hours: 12 hours · Workplace assessment: 3 hours Open the Swim Teacher Practical Assessment Overview to view on-course assessment information. Candidates who want to complete this training must be at least 16 years old or turning 16 during the calendar year in which the course takes place. Candidates cannot obtain a Swim Teacher Licence until they are 16 years of age. Swim Teacher Licencing The Licence Application is to be completed in full, submitted to your Approved Workplace Supervisor for final approval. Your Approved Workplace Supervisor will submit the application on your behalf to the closest Royal Life Saving Office. Applications submitted by candidates will not be considered and will be returned for submission by your Approved Workplace Supervisor. The Swim Teacher Licence is record you can competently and confidently teach swimming skills to children ages and above. All candidates are covered under Royal Life Saving Insurance until the final Statement of Attainment is issued. View our Swim Teacher Insurance Policy Document for further information. Working With Children Checks Swim Teachers require the relevant Working with Children Check in your State or Territory, whether you are paid or a volunteer. Candidates will require the relevant Working with Children Check in your State or Territory, to complete the Post Course Workbook (Steps 3 and 4). Please be aware that some checks can take several weeks to be processed, it is recommended that you apply for your Working with Children Check (NSW) , or Working With Vulnerable People check ( ACT & Tasmania ) as early as possible to avoid delays. Candidates under 18 (NSW), 16 (ACT & Tasmania) may not be required to complete a Working With Children Check, it is recommended you confirm with your local State or Territory authority. Candidates cannot obtain a Swim Teacher Licence until they are 16 years of age. Outcomes The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher course contains units of competency which are nationally recognised from the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training package. Royal Life Saving Society works to prevent drowning and facilitate healthy, active lifestyles by equipping all Australians with water safety skills. Royal Life Saving Society also advocate on a wide range of drowning prevention and water safety issues through targeted campaigns, educating communities about the risks of drowning and prevention strategies including providing access to swimming and water safety education and key drowning prevention materials for all communities. Across the centre of the artwork features Past, Present and Emerging and the journey of Royal Life Saving. Depicted at the top and bottom of the artwork are the eight areas where Royal Life Saving Society are located including Coffs Harbour (Gumbaynggirr country), Illawarra (Dharawal country), Orange (Wiradjuri country), Wagga Wagga (Wiradjuri Country), Australian Capital Territory (Ngunnawal country), Sydney (head office) (Dharug country), Hunter/Newcastle (Wonnarua country) and Tasmania (lutruwita country). Travelling through these regions is shared knowledge from one community to the next.
