World Drowning Prevention Day 2026: Uniting to Turn the Tide Against Drowning

Today marks the beginning of World Drowning Prevention Day activation week, with communities across NSW, ACT and Tasmania encouraged to come together to help turn the tide against drowning.
Observed annually on 25 July, World Drowning Prevention Day is a United Nations-recognised global advocacy day that shines a spotlight on one important message: drowning is preventable.
This year's theme, "Uniting to Turn the Tide Against Drowning," recognises that preventing drowning is a shared responsibility. Whether you're a parent, teacher, swim instructor, aquatic professional, community organisation, workplace or recreational water user, every action you take can help create safer communities around water.

Why does World Drowning Prevention Day matter?
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives every year. In Australia, drowning continues to have a devastating impact on families and communities, with recent trends highlighting increasing concern around:
declining swimming and water safety skills among children and young people
increasing drowning rates among older Australians
ongoing risks around inland waterways
the overrepresentation of culturally and linguistically diverse communities in drowning statistics.
The encouraging news is that drowning is preventable. Through swimming and water safety education, active supervision, CPR training, safer behaviours around water and strong community partnerships, we can reduce drowning and save lives.
World Drowning Prevention Day is an opportunity to start conversations, build awareness and inspire action that lasts well beyond a single day.

As World Drowning Prevention Day falls on a Saturday this year, we encourage organisations to celebrate throughout the week leading into 25 July.

Working together to save lives
World Drowning Prevention Day reminds us that preventing drowning isn't the responsibility of one person or one organisation - it takes all of us.
This week, communities across Australia will come together through local events, school activities, aquatic centre activations and the 2026 National Water Safety Summit, where leaders from across the country will collaborate, share research and strengthen collective efforts to reduce drowning.
Every conversation, every swimming lesson, every CPR course and every moment of active supervision contributes to a safer future.
Together, we can turn the tide against drowning.
