1,800 NSW Teachers Equipped with Lifesaving Skills Ahead of Summer
Royal Life Saving NSW has helped prepare 1,800 teachers across 56 schools with essential lifesaving skills as part of the NSW Department of Education's Staff Development Day on 12 October 2026.
With warmer weather approaching and schools preparing for swimming carnivals, excursions and outdoor activities, the training provided an important opportunity for teachers to refresh their knowledge and build confidence in responding to emergencies.
Royal Life Saving NSW delivered a range of nationally recognised training courses, including CPR, First Aid, Anaphylaxis Management and Perform Water Rescues, helping teachers develop practical skills to keep students safe both in and out of the classroom.
Preparing Teachers for Water-Based Activities
A key focus of the training was the Perform Water Rescues qualification, which is now a requirement for NSW Department of Education teachers supervising students during certain water-based excursions and activities.
This training equips teachers with essential water rescue knowledge and practical skills to identify potential hazards, respond to aquatic emergencies and assist someone in difficulty in the water.
With summer fast approaching, ensuring teachers have the appropriate training and qualifications is an important step in supporting safe participation in aquatic activities and reducing drowning risks among school-aged children.
Building Safer School Communities
Beyond water safety, CPR, First Aid and Anaphylaxis training provide teachers with the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively to a range of medical emergencies.
From recognising the signs of anaphylaxis to performing CPR during a cardiac emergency, these skills can make a critical difference when every second counts.
By investing in staff training, schools are strengthening their emergency preparedness and helping create safer learning environments for students, staff and the wider school community.
A Statewide Commitment to Safety
Training 1,800 teachers from 56 schools in a single day represents a significant investment in school safety across NSW.
Royal Life Saving NSW is proud to support schools and educators through accessible, high-quality training that builds confidence, strengthens emergency response capabilities and promotes a culture of safety.
We thank all participating schools and teachers for their commitment to developing these important lifesaving skills.
As the warmer months approach, Royal Life Saving NSW encourages schools to review their staff training requirements and ensure teachers are appropriately qualified for upcoming aquatic activities and excursions.
