  • Covid19 Still Impacting Lifeguard Courses

The 2021 Covid Lockdowns created immense pressure on our industry, with a large volume of Pool Lifeguards needing to renew their annual updates once pools opened in October 2021. This has resulted in an unusually large volume of candidates needing to renew their licence in our peak period of September to December again this year. Royal Life Saving NSW have increased the number of Pool Lifeguard Courses to accommodate this demand and currently have spaces available throughout NSW. Candidates are encouraged to forward plan their updates and consider booking in early to avoid missing out on a course before their licence expires and prevent them from working. Existing lifeguards who enrol into a pool lifeguard update course must hold a current First Aid Certificate as a prerequisite. Existing RLSNSW Lifeguards are eligible for a $40.00 discount on First Aid training with Royal Life Saving NSW. New Pool Lifeguards who book both a Pool Lifeguard course and a First Aid training course with Royal Life Saving NSW are eligible for a discount on their First Aid course fee. The discount offers enrolment into the HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid at $90.00 instead of the RRP $130.00. To take advantage of this offer, simply book into a Pool Lifeguard Course and contact our courses team or your nearest regional office to access your discount code for your First Aid Course. Thinking of becoming a Lifeguard? There is currently an Industry-wide shortage of Lifeguards following Covid, which means Lifeguards are very high in demand with plenty of employment opportunities available. • Thousands partake in community education programs thanks to Royal Life Saving's generous supporters

And that's a wrap! Royal Life Saving NSW is pleased to have seen so many community members take part in water safety education programs throughout the year, highlighting the importance of CPR and water safety skills out in the community. Largely funded by our dedicated club partners and organisations through Club Grants, almost 8,000 students, parents and community members attended either in-person or online programs held throughout the year. The programs delivered this year included: Parent and Toddler Water Safety Sessions, Preschool Water Safety Session Infants and Primary Water Safety Sessions (Stage 1 and Stage 2) CPR Leadership sessions for Year 5 and 6 school leaders Early Life CPR Parent sessions Royal Life Saving Schools Coordinator, Erin Webster, received feedback from participants who were thankful that Royal Life Saving were able to modify sessions when COVID-19 restrictions hit. “Schools and daycare centres we visit, whether it be in person or virtually, value and appreciate the life-saving information on water safety and CPR awareness that we provide. "One particular school in the Willoughby LGA actively seeks out our CPR program for their students every year. At the end of last year, students and staff experienced the importance of CPR first-hand when a staff member's husband collapsed on school grounds. The event was a reminder that CPR skills are critical no matter your age or the setting,” said Mrs. Webster. A special thanks to our amazing community educators, without them, we would not have been able to deliver 171 water safety and CPR awareness sessions for students, infants, and parents across 12 Local Government Areas (LGAs) within Sydney! • About Lakes and Dams

Come and join the Waddles family in their adventure to learn more about Water Safety for Pre School Children About Lakes and Dams Menu Become a Partner About Rivers and Creeks About At the Pool About Lakes and Dams Book a School Visit Does your staff need Child Care First Aid? This course covers the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority View More.. Drowning in Lakes, Dams and Lagoons Although many drownings occur around water at the home, research shows that a high number of child drownings also occur at inland water ways. A 10 year analysis of drownings at lakes, dams and lagoons between 2008 and 2018 showed that a total of 255 drowning deaths occurred across Australia. Ten percent of these drownings (26) in lakes, dams and lagoons were children aged 0-4 years with majority of drownings occurring in dams. About the Waddles Program The Waddles program aims to deliver education to parents and children around the different risks around varied water ways. Waddles- Lakes and Dams focuses on teaching young children about the dangers around lakes and dams in a fun and engaging way and hopes to equip them with the skills to recognise dangerous situations and what they should do to stay safe. Young Children are inherently attracted to water, but do not necessarily understand the consequences should they fall in. Even young children who may possess basic aquatic skills are not water safe or ‘drown-proof’. As they may panic or forget their skills in an emergency or unfamiliar environment. The Story This story follows a family of ducks on a camping trip at their local lake. Each duckling encounters a different element of danger at a lake or dam.The repeated message throughout stresses two points – that these environments are dangerous to them, and they should be accompanied by an adult when near water. This is reinforced by the tagline ‘Take care near lakes and dams. Have an adult close at hand.’ To assist children in developing practical skills to stay safe in all aquatic environments, Royal Life Saving NSW encourages parents and carers to involve their children in water familiarization and learn to swim classes from a young age, and to participate safely in all aquatic pursuits and environments. Activity Sheets A variety of activity sheets are accessible on the website, they are available for download and include the following: Dot to dots Colouring in Mazes Find the missing object Syllabus Links Certificate At the completion of the Preschool Water Safety Program, teachers can award participating children with a certificate to recognise each student as a ‘Water Smart Kid’. This certificate is available for download on the website under Delivery Resources. Centre’s are encouraged to present a certificate to each child who has watched the animation or attended a reading of the book, attempted some of the activities and has engaged with any additional water safety education delivered by your centre. Royal Life Saving would also like to recognise each participating centre for your involvement in the program and, more importantly, your contribution towards child drowning prevention. A centre certificate is available for download on the website under Delivery Resources. We encourage you to print and display this certificate at the completion of the program to promote your centre as being ‘Water Smart’. • Royal Life Saving Launches new resources for Multicultural Communities

Wednesday 18 January 2023 - Royal Life Saving NSW water safety videos translated into seven priority languages were launched at a community water-safety demonstration day at Lake Parramatta today. Royal Life Saving NSW CEO Michael Ilinsky said the free event encouraged people from diverse backgrounds who may not have had access to safety programs as children, to enjoy the water with confidence. “Gathering with family and friends around the water is an Australian way of life to be embraced and enjoyed with confidence. “Unfortunately people from diverse backgrounds, and those from Western Sydney, have been disproportionately represented in drowning statistics – eight of the 12 most at-risk local government areas are in south-west Sydney and In the past decade there have been 725 people who drowned in Australia, who were born overseas. “Our goal is to minimise risks by building knowledge, skills and confidence to navigate conditions in and around the water, whether they’re enjoying a day at the lake, heading to a beach or traveling to other inland waterways. A Day at the Lake brought together 145 participants from Western Sydney’s multicultural communities in western Sydney for practical demonstrations of CPR, dry-land rescue, understanding safety and warning signage. The practical sessions were presented by Royal Life Saving and Surf Life Saving NSW, in collaboration with Parramatta City Council. NSW Member for Parramatta and Minister for Correctional Services, the Hon. Geoff Lee, said: “Almost 70 per cent of drownings occur when lack of swimming and survival skills are a key factor. “Practical, community-based events, safety education and awareness campaigns help to reduce this toll and provide access to this great Australian way of life for all. “A Day at the Lake captures the spirit and most important advice for the summer for multicultural communities. Have fun and let’s keep one another safe this summer.” Mr Ilinsky said the safety messages now translated into seven priority languages, target those most at risk of drowning. “RLSNSW encourages community groups, local government and media organisations to share the messages and materials, particularly ahead of the Australia Day long weekend. “We want all Australians to embrace the water and to do so safely. • Royal Life Saving engaging with our Community

The team at Royal Life Saving NSW take every opportunity to regularly participate and engage in community events from expos, open days, career fairs and more. Over the past couple of weeks our Cultural Engagement Coordinator, Ying Fan has been out and about doing what she does best, making connections and educating the community on swimming, water safety and drowning prevention. Ying attended the recent Multicultural Expo in Hornsby connecting with over 60 people from various CALD groups about our newest Inland Water Safety campaign along with meeting important Multicultural partners like CASS, Your Side, and the Cancer Council, establishing relationships to work together now and into the future. A hot topic for enquiries from the neighbourhood surrounded an upcoming funded adult learn to swim program that Royal Life Saving is running in conjunction with Hornsby Aquatic Centre. One of the many community funded education programs that Royal Life Saving run across the state, every week. It was great to see so many adults wanting to take their swimming journey, because it's never too late to learn to swim. Ying followed up this event with attending the Community and Police Expo in Fairfield once again attracting many enquiries about our various services, funded programs and community events including our upcoming 'A Day at the River' family water safety day on the Georges River. If you are interested in registering for this event, please follow the link A Day at the River - Georges River Water Safety Day | Royal Life Saving (drowningprevention.org.au).
