- Health Promotion Team Yearly Wrap Up
Project Harmony: In the last quarter of this financial year, Royal Life Saving NSW, supported by the NSW Government, partnered with local governments in Western and South Western Sydney to deliver Project Harmony, a groundbreaking initiative providing 10 free swimming lessons to vulnerable preschoolers in communities with the highest drowning risks. With an outstanding response from communities across Western and South Western Sydney we had over 370 preschool children enrol across participating venues, learning swimming for the first time! We are excited to continue this initiative across the winter season and prepare children and their families for a safe summer of fun in, on and around the water later this year! Project Harmony would not be possible without the support of the following councils and leisure management groups. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Blacktown Council, Camden Council, The YMCA, Canterbury Bankstown Council, Cumberland Council, Georges River Council, Bluefit Swimming, The Hills Shire Council, Parramatta Council, Liverpool Council and Belgravia Leisure. Club Grants 2023/2024: In the 2023/2024 financial year Royal Life Saving NSW has been fortunate to receive over $270,000 from RSL and Community Clubs across NSW through the Club Grants scheme. These grant funds have been used to conduct 40 swimming, lifesaving or water safety education programs for over 13,000 people throughout NSW. Our programs target those most in need of lifesaving and water safety education so our most at risk groups can all enjoy and safely recreate in, on and around the water. Thank you to the 23 clubs who have supported us this year! We are excited to continue sharing our water safety knowledge with our local communities. - School sports activities to start from 1 November
School sports activities, including indoor and outdoor pools for student specified activities, are allowed to proceed from 1 November 2021 for the rest of Term 4. Royal Life Saving NSW welcomes the update from the NSW Department of Education, providing another avenue for students to get back in the water and refresh their water safety skills. Students are allowed to participate in the below activities whilst following COVID-19 protocols that align with NSW Public Health Orders and the Reopening NSW roadmap: Indoor pools: school swimming and water safety lessons, swimming squads, lap swimming and rehabilitation Outdoor pools: swimming lessons and recreational purposes The same requirements still apply for access to pool facilities: Students aged 16 and older (and staff) must be fully vaccinated to enter public indoor pool facilities until 1 December and will be required to show proof of vaccination status to facility staff on arrival. Students in Year 7 and above (and staff) must wear masks indoors at all times when not exercising, including in change rooms and bathroom facilities. Third-party providers are allowed to support swimming activities if they are fully vaccinated and must check in and check out using the school’s QR Code if held on a school site or the venue’s QR code if held outside of the school. If transport is required, mixing and mingling between cohorts must be minimised. Masks are required on buses for staff and students in Year 7 and above and are strongly encouraged for primary students. With summer around the corner, now is the perfect time to get your class back in the water and refresh their water safety skills. - This National Water Safety Day it’s time to get back in the pool with the help of the NSW Government
Between July 2020 and June 2021, despite COVID-19, there was an increase in drowning deaths across Australia (294) with an increase of 20% on the previous year (245). The highest number of drowning deaths occur during the months of summer with Australians making the most of the coastline, pools, rivers and lakes. To keep our community safe around water, now more than ever it is important for families to get back into swimming lessons. First Lap vouchers are now readily available for parents and caregivers to assist children aged 3 – 6 years to get back into the water for swimming lessons. If you haven’t already, it’s time to jump on board with the initiative and support kids returning to the pool. Head to our latest news story to find the step-by-step guide for facilities to join. Swimming lessons make up the practical learning component of the National Swimming and Water Safety Framework, and Royal Life Saving NSW completes the theory aspect with our dedicated pre-school program, Waddles. Royal Life Saving pre-school education partners have free access to our Waddles program and resources, providing interactive learning for children aged 3 – 6 years with the help of our colourful duck family. Any organisation such as a pre-school, swim school or community group can become a pre-school education partner for free! 1 Dec 2021 This National Water Safety Day it’s time to get back in the pool with the help of the NSW Government Swimming & Lifesaving < Back to News Between July 2020 and June 2021, despite COVID-19, there was an increase in drowning deaths across Australia (294) with an increase of 20% on the previous year (245). - Dive Into Professional Development at the Emerging Swim Teachers Swimposium
Learn to Swim teachers at all stages of their teaching journey are invited to come together for a day of practical learning, fresh ideas and professional development at the Emerging Swim Teachers Swimposium, taking place on Wednesday 30 September 2026 at Cranbrook School Swimming Pool, Bellevue Hill. Whether you're newly qualified, have been teaching for a few years or bring plenty of experience to your swimming lessons, the Swimposium is an opportunity to refresh your skills, discover new teaching techniques and take away practical ideas you can use in the water. Learn to Swim teachers play an important role in helping people develop the skills, confidence and knowledge to enjoy the water safely. With every swimmer learning differently, having a range of activities, teaching strategies and approaches available can make a real difference to both the teacher and their students. The Swimposium has been designed with this in mind, bringing teachers together for a practical day focused on the everyday realities of teaching swimming and water safety. Practical learning for your swimming lessons Throughout the day, experienced presenters will lead a combination of interactive workshops, practical demonstrations and in-water sessions, providing teachers with ideas and techniques they can apply directly to their own classes. Topics will explore areas including: practical techniques for teaching swimming and water safety skills creative activities and ideas to keep lessons engaging adapting activities for different abilities, ages and learning needs supporting swimmers to build confidence in the water improving skill development and progression creating positive and enjoyable learning experiences fresh approaches to lesson planning and delivery. With a strong focus on practical learning, attendees will have opportunities to see techniques in action, participate in activities and consider how different approaches could be incorporated into their own Learn to Swim lessons. Something for teachers at every stage While the Emerging Swim Teachers Swimposium is a great opportunity for newer teachers to build their knowledge and confidence, the day is not just for those starting out. More experienced Learn to Swim teachers are encouraged to attend to refresh their knowledge, discover new activities and teaching approaches, and exchange ideas with others working in the industry. Sometimes even a small change to an activity, explanation or lesson structure can help a swimmer understand a skill differently. The Swimposium provides an opportunity to step away from regular lessons for a day, learn from others and return to the water with new ideas and renewed enthusiasm for teaching. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet other Learn to Swim teachers, share experiences and build connections with people who understand the challenges and rewards of teaching swimming. Earn 12 Professional Development points As an added benefit, attendees who complete the full Swimposium will receive 12 Professional Development (PD) points towards their Swim Teacher Licence renewal. This makes the Swimposium a great opportunity to work towards your professional development requirements while gaining practical skills and ideas that can be used straight away in your lessons. - Local kids and staff celebrate our longest-running swimming program!
Kids in our learn to swim program were treated to morning tea with bright cupcakes and fun props in celebration of Swim and Survive turning 40! Our RLS Denistone East Aquatic Academy welcomed parents, kids and staff to take part in the celebration, honouring the vital swimming and water safety program that began back in 1982. This amazing program has contributed to the reduction of drowning statistics, particularly for primary school children aged 5 to 14 years as well as providing the skills and knowledge required for a lifetime of active and safe aquatic recreation. NSW, ACT and Tasmania have over 30 active Swim and Survive Partners, and numbers are growing as the new program was introduced earlier this year. Latest research conducted by RLS National Society will also lead to a new Adult Swim and Survive curriculum to be released later this year. All our partners are encouraged to participate during the official celebration time this week from 23 – 29 May and share their best snaps with us! - New learn to swim program to deliver real results
The Minns Labor Government today announced 15 learn to swim providers had been appointed to deliver its new State-wide learn to swim program. Under the new program, those most at-risk of drowning will be able to access as many as 10 lessons completely free of charge to ensure they develop basic swimming and anti-drowning skills. The providers will deliver free learn to swim and water safety lessons to all major at-risk demographics including people from low socioeconomic groups, multicultural communities, First Nations people and people in regional areas. Recent drowning statistics have shown that the previous approach was not working, it showed that people born overseas and those living in the most disadvantaged areas of NSW are at the highest risk of drowning. The providers will commence delivery of the learn to swim programs in the coming months. NSW residents can find their local program by visiting: https://www.sport.nsw.gov.au/learn-to-swim-program Royal Life Saving NSW welcomes this critical investment in water safety education. Minister for Sport Steve Kamper: “Being able to swim at your local pool, beach or river is one of the best things about living in NSW. “The NSW Government is supporting communities at the highest risk of drowning by funding the delivery of free learn to swim and water safety lessons by learn to swim providers at swimming pools across NSW. “Critically, it will mean more NSW residents can swim safely next summer and provide cost-of-living relief at a time when those groups need it most. “This was reinforced by the results of the National Drowning Report 2024 that found multicultural communities, disadvantaged communities and people living in regional areas had higher rates of drowning than other parts of the community. “The learn to swim and water safety programs delivered by the providers announced today will provide our most at risk members of the community with vital swimming and water safety skills.” Lord Mayor of City of Parramatta Councillor Martin Zaiter said: “Learning to swim is an important life skill, and here at Parramatta Aquatic Centre, we have the best facilities to bring people together and teach them how to swim. “Since opening in 2023, Parramatta Aquatic Centre has had over a million people through the turnstiles, with about 13,000 people on average visiting each week this summer. “We have local residents from 128 nationalities who speak 117 languages, so it’s vital that we support people of all ages and backgrounds to learn to swim. “This investment by the NSW Government will help us deliver these essential Learn to Swim classes. This funding will not only save lives but help build community and lifelong skills.” Chief Executive Officer Royal Life Saving Society - Australia (NSW, ACT, Tasmania) Michael Ilinsky said: “Royal Life Saving NSW welcomes this critical investment in water safety education. Taking high-quality programs directly to communities in need will have a lasting impact. “After a challenging summer, this initiative ensures that more individuals—especially those at risk—gain vital water safety skills for life. “Learning to swim is a life skill. This government funding will provide many with their first aquatic experience, preparing them for a lifetime of safe aquatic participation. “Royal Life Saving NSW applauds this activation, which prioritises access to quality water safety programs in the communities that need them most. “This initiative will break down barriers, ensuring participants, regardless of background, have the opportunity to learn vital swimming and water safety skills.” If you have any enquiries about these programs or how you can get involved, please contact: swimandsurvive@royalnsw.com.au 25 Feb 2025 New learn to swim program to deliver real results Media Releases < Back to News The Minns Labor Government today announced 15 learn to swim providers had been appointed to deliver its new State-wide learn to swim program.
