Royal Life Saving releases report into the social, health and economic value of the Australian Aquatic Industry. Prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Australia, and commissioned by Royal Life Saving Society – Australia. Our organisation is involved in a diverse range of swimming, water safety and lifesaving agenda and is pleased to contribute to the benefits described in the report and to see these advocated in this way. We wish to provide a copy of the report highlights as well as more information on where to access the full report to assist you, your partners, and your constituents in supporting the aquatic industry’s value and contribution to the Australian community, particularly as the industry rebuilds following the pandemic. The report reinforces the myriad of ways that the aquatic industry benefits the Australian community and found that the industry: is a driver of economic activity throughout Australia, employing the equivalent of 33,600 full time employees and adding $2.8 billion to gross domestic product (GDP) is a generator of $2.5 billion in health benefits, ranging across a reduction in the burden of disease, improved mental health outcomes, reduced absenteeism, and reduced childhood drowning is a provider of $3.8 billion’s worth of social benefits such as: enhancing an individual’s leisure time or creating increased life satisfaction; by bringing people together; supporting more vulnerable groups; and supporting early learning. 10 Aug 2021 Understanding the social, health and economic value of the Australian Aquatic Industry Members & Partners < Back to News Royal Life Saving releases report into the social, health and economic value of the Australian Aquatic Industry. - Royal Life Saving Marks 130 Summers of Saving Lives with NSW Parliament Exhibition
Royal Life Saving is proud to mark 130 Summers of service to the community with a special exhibition at NSW Parliament House this April. Waterway of Life – 130 Summers of Royal Life Saving celebrates our legacy, impact, and continued commitment to drowning prevention and water safety across New South Wales. Last week, Royal Life Saving NSW proudly launched the new public exhibition to mark this extraordinary milestone — 130 Summers of Royal Life Saving.Titled Waterway of Life, the exhibition was officially opened at a special event attended by NSW Premier Chris Minns, Olympic diver and social media advocate Sam Fricker, Members of Parliament, community leaders, and representatives from across the aquatic, education, and emergency services sectors. Located on the northern wall of the Parliament’s Fountain Court, the free exhibition showcases our organisation’s journey since its establishment in NSW in 1894. Through archival photographs, educational displays, data, and memorabilia, the exhibition highlights the people, places and pivotal moments that have shaped our mission to keep Australians safe in, on and around the water. “For 130 summers, Royal Life Saving has worked to equip Australians with the skills to swim, rescue and respond,” said Royal Life Saving NSW CEO, Michael Ilinsky. “Whether it’s earning a Bronze Medallion, learning CPR, or being saved by one of our trained lifesavers, our work has touched generations of families across the state.” “Our vision is for every Australian to enjoy the water safely. Sadly, drowning remains a major issue in NSW, and this exhibition is a timely reminder of the critical role water safety education plays in preventing tragedy.” The exhibition is being hosted by Roy Butler MP, Member for Barwon, who praised the importance of the milestone: “Swimming is part of our Australian identity, and the impact of Royal Life Saving's work cannot be overstated. This exhibition is an opportunity to recognise an organisation that remains as vital today as it was 130 years ago.” Waterway of Life – 130 Summers of Royal Life Saving is open to the public on weekdays from 9am–5pm at NSW Parliament House, Fountain Court (6 Macquarie Street, Sydney), until 23 April 2025. Entry is free. This exhibition is more than a look back — it’s a call to action. We invite all members of the community to visit, reflect, and celebrate our shared responsibility to keep every life safe around water. 1 Apr 2025 Royal Life Saving Marks 130 Summers of Saving Lives with NSW Parliament Exhibition Event < Back to News Royal Life Saving is proud to mark 130 Summers of service to the community with a special exhibition at NSW Parliament House this April. - UNDERSTANDING PRE SCHOOL LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMS
UNDERSTANDING PRE SCHOOL LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMS UNDERSTANDING PRE SCHOOL LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMS t is important for Parents to understand the benefits and what to expect with their childs pre school Swimming and Water Safety Program. In this articlae we explore what you should expect at a minimum. Key Features of Pre School Programs At this stage of the learn to swim journey the Swim School programs should focus on the development of confidence and competence in a range of foundation swimming and water safety skills that will be built upon in the later stages. Students will become familiar with the water and by the end of this stage have the ability to perform basic skills independently. Ages from 3 years to 5 years Independent participation Learn and develop fundamental movement skills Transition level for less confident What can I expect my child to learn? This stage provides opportunities for students to explore and learn about moving in and under the water. The content provides a basis to develop knowledge and skills for students to safely enjoy the water in a supervised environment. It provides opportunities to identify dangers inherent in a range of aquatic environments but specifically the home. In addition, the content enables students to explore the people who are important to their safety and to develop a basic understanding of the importance of calling for help and self-preservation in an aquatic emergency. It enables students to develop and practise swimming and water safety skills through structured activities. Learning Outcomes By the end of the Pre School a student should be able to recognise and follow basic safety rules in an aquatic environment, perform a range of fundamental skills and recover to safety from a simulated accidental entry. Specifically this includes: Identifying and describing where water can be found in locations at or near the home Identifying an emergency and actions to help Describing and following rules for safe behaviour in aquatic environments at or near the home Entering and exiting shallow water unassisted Floating and recovering to a standing or secure position Submerging the body and moving through an obstacle Moving continuously for a distance of 5 metres Performing a survival sequence What Qualifications should my teacher have? All Swim Teachers who are teaching Pre School children should hold a unit of competency which is nationally recognised from the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training package. Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following unit: SISCAQU008 Instruct water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills SISCAQU009 Instruct water safety and survival skills SISCAQU010 Instruct swimming strokes SISCAQU002 Perform basic water rescues Parent and Carer Involvement Parent and carer involvement is a massive factor for children’s enjoyment and engagement in the learning process as well as their skill progression and achievement. The best way to do this is to be actively involved and get wet! Preschool age children who have been participating regularly in swimming lessons or who have progressed from infant and toddler lessons, can now participate independently with the teacher. Preschool age children love showing off their skills throughout lessons so even though parents and carers are not in the water, they have an important role to play in acknowledging small achievements and providing encouragement and emotional support. You as a Parent should also be receiving a range of safety information to help understand and educate your child. This includes such things as: Statistics and Facts of Child Drowning Child Drowning Strategies Parent / Carer Supervision and Common Distrations The important of restricting access in and around the home Bath Safety How to Perform CPR
