- Collaboration and Education in Tasmania
Following a commitment declared at our Tasmania Industry Networking event in December 2022 by CEO Michael Ilinsky to deliver greater education, support and engagement of the Tasmanian government, industry and community now and in the future. Key team members from our Royal Life Saving NSW | ACT | TAS head office visited our southern friends to deliver on this promise. Two events were scheduled over this week a Drowning Prevention Workshop in Hobart facilitated by our General Manager of Drowning Prevention and Education, Craig Roberts. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss programs, strategies and opportunities targeting inland waterways and ageing communities along with other identified at-risk groups in order reduce drownings and better service the communities. This is the third Workshop of this kind that we have delivered in the past 8 months with others taking place in the Albury-Wodonga region and Western Sydney with more regions to come. Drowning Prevention is a critical issue within the community, and we can’t make a significant difference in this area without a collaborative and holistic approach. The Aquatic Leadership Seminar held in Launceston was attended by an impressive range of local Industry professionals. The Royal Life Saving Aquatic Regional Seminar Series that commenced in the Hunter Region in July 2022, covered a range of topics for Aquatic Leaders with a focus on aquatic management, risk services and partnership opportunities as well as streams for both pool operations and swim school management. In addition to these events, the team undertook a series of localised filming of Tasmania waterways and people that will be used to develop further water safety and drowning prevention campaigns to promote within the community. We had the pleasure of engaging with two high profile locals the Honourable Nick Duigan MLC –Legislative Council, Liberal Member for Windermere and former host of National fishing show Hook, Line and Sinker along with Peter Tonkin, former Olympic Swimmer and coach to help spread these important safety message. - Updated extension periods for Lifeguard qualifications
Last week, the National Aquatic Industry Committee communicated it's confirmed renewed position on Lifeguard qualification/licence extensions. The committee endorsed the following: Extension periods for Pool Lifeguards now mirror the length of their associated lockdown (example: 12 week lockdown equals 12 week extension) Extension periods for Swim Teachers remain at a maximum of 4 weeks where the Swim Teacher has been in lockdown for a period of 7 days or more Extension periods for Aquatic Program Instructors remain at a maximum of 4 weeks where the instructor has been in lockdown for a period of 7 days or more All extension periods will commence from the date aquatic facilities are able to reopen. NSW has been harshly affected by this second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and this announcement was welcomed by an industry desperate to get back on it's feet. Craig Roberts, General Manager of Drowning Prevention and Education at Royal Life Saving NSW said "The National Aquatic Industry Committee's statement and renewed position has provided some reassurance across the sector. Pool managers and their teams can now plan a little more confidently knowing that the requirements for requalification are more flexible." Royal Life Saving is planning for the increased demand in training and update courses once Government vaccination targets are met and communities start to open back up again across NSW and the ACT. Penny Hodgers, General Manager of Capability and Capacity at Royal Life Saving NSW said, "Royal Life Saving has training opportunities already scheduled until the end of the year. We strongly encourage all affected Lifeguards and Swim Teachers to book into an update course as soon as it is practical to do so. Our fee-free transfer policy will ensure nobody who has to reschedule a course due to COVID will be financially penalised". With the majority of centres expected to reopen at similar times, those who leave their qualification renewal until the last minute may experience fewer course options. - NSW Team Talents on Show at the APLSC 2024
The annual Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships (APLSC) were held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre this year, from the 18-20 January 2024. The APLSC is renowned for bringing together athletes, volunteers and staff from across the nation for an exciting competition, held both in the water with speed events and out of the water with CPR and simulated emergency response competitions (SERC). This year, NSW had enough athletes to take both a State Team and Development Team to compete in the APLSC, and managed to achieve yet another podium finish, snagging 3rd place in the Overall Team Point score. In addition to this fantastic achievement by the NSW team, there were some outstanding individual results across the board from our talented athletes. Special mention goes to Ryan McNamara, who was named the Men’s U14 Overall Individual Champion, winning 5 individual gold medals. NSW also had 3 athletes claim silver medals in the Overall Individual Championship: Mack Elliott (U16 men), Brayden Woodford (U19 men) and Chelsea Jones (Open women).
