Swim Teacher - Swimming and Water Safety

Overview 

Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher is a nationally recognised course that provides candidates with essential competencies to teach swimming and water safety to children aged 3-12 years. Accreditation is valid for three years. 

 

This course will additionally cover the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. 

 

Please note: Royal Life Saving Society NSW is not a CRICOS provider; it is unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa.  


Delivery Mode 

This course is delivered in a blended format; below are the steps and participant’s journey. 


Step 1 Book a course. Course schedules can be found in the ‘’How to enrol’’ section below. 


Step 2 Complete online modules. Participants will be required to complete a self-paced online knowledge component. Only those who have completed the online modules in full will be able to attend the practical component of this course. 


Step 3 Attend and complete practical face-to-face course. Participate in a 1-day practical face-to-face course.  


Step 4 Complete section 1 and 2 of the Licensing Application Workbook. In addition to the successful pre-course and on-course assessments, participants are required to complete a Swim Teacher Licensing Application Workbook. This 2-step application contains evidence of the units of competency that will be completed on the job. 

**This on-the-job assessment ensures the swim teacher can apply the skills learnt in the training course at their place of employment. The on-the-job component needs to be signed off by a workplace supervisor. 


Step 5 Submit Licensing Application Workbook. Participants must submit their completed Swim Teacher Licensing Application Workbook to their nearest Royal Life Saving office via email.  


The amount of training is approximately 32 hours, comprising of:

·       Online learning and assessment: 9 hours

·       Face-to-Face assessment/supervised Instruction: 8 hours

·       On-the-job teaching and shadowing: 12 hours

·       Workplace assessment: 3 hours    


Prerequisites 

While there are no prerequisites to enrol on this course, candidates are required to have a reasonable level of fitness and swimming ability to perform the required aquatic skills. 

 

In addition, practical application of Resuscitation and other practical scenarios will require kneeling on the floor. To achieve HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation Statement of Attainment‚ candidates must successfully complete the practical components under the award conditions. 

 

Age Requirement 

Participants wishing to complete this training are to be 16 years of age or turning 16 in the calendar within which the course is to be held to participate in this course. Participants cannot be licensed until they are 16 years of age. 

 

Outcomes 

The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher course contains units of competency which are nationally recognised from the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training package. Upon successful completion of all pre-course, on-course assessment and post-course licencing requirements, course participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following units from the SISSS00132 - Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Skillset: 

 

Upon successful pre-course and on-course assessment requirements:

·       SISCAQU020 - Perform water rescues

·       SISCAQU023 - Plan swimming lessons

·       SISCAQU025 - Teach water safety and survival skills

 

In addition, successful candidates will also attain:

·       HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

 

Upon successful post course licensing/on-the job assessment requirements.

·       SISCAQU024 - Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills

·       SISCAQU026 - Teach swimming strokes

 

Achievement of these units provides credit towards SIS30122 - Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation
